Nikon D800 released

Nikons newest DSLR, D800.

It will be interesting to see how this works. Will be a good choice for wedding photography, 6400 so enough range though how clear will the results be. I can see a number of people trying to buy the superb D700 while stocks remain as it is such a fantastic camera for wedding and poor / changeable light conditions... when matched with high quality lenses.

D4 would be my choice, though at £5k, plus lenses, Nikon has learnt from the, mistake, of the D3 and D700 launch: two cameras with very similar performance though not price.

Adobe Lightroom 4 Beta - First looks

I've just downloaded the LR4 beta from Adobe and had a quick 15 mins play with it.... is it worth an upgrade to the already quite brilliant LR3?

Well 15 mins may be too soon to say, for some... but, not for me where do I sign!

I quickly breezed through the modules:

Library: the Recovery arrows have gone and been replaced by Highlights, Shadows, Blacks & Whites..

Develop: as in the library you have more control over the Highlights and Shadow, Blacks & Whites.. a little counter intuitively, for me anyway, to make the image darker you slide the shadows & blacks in to the negative... to make them lighter + But much more control than the superb as it was Recover slider.

The included LR presets have been grouped in to manageable collections rather than one long list, Very Good.

Another big improvement is the brush... you can now selectively brush in or out: shadows, sharpness, noise, moire' in addition to those already there in LR3.

MAP: ... highlight your photo or group of photos, you can also select photos by location including GPS.

BOOK: is will save loads of time, a range of templates for the very popular Blurb publishing..

Sideshow: not a module I've used much in the past, it's a bit too basic for me, I want animation or at least a more dramatic viewing experience: fades & overlays etc.

Print: still very good though not seeing a huge improvement in features

WEB: still very, very useful with 5 default layouts... the ability to add 3rd party tools is still it's best feature.

Dale and Gemma pre wedding photo session

Dale and Gemma's pre-wedding photo session. I really like the winter sun, it's low in the sky and offers a challenge and opportunity to try something a little different.

Shooting in to the sun causes the camera all kinds of problems for exposure, though if you tweak your settings it offers the chance to create in camera something that is normally created with hours of editing at a computer. I prefer the real thing myself, not easy, and certainly not something I'd be able to get on auto :-)

I really like high contrast photos, while we were wandering along taking photos I noticed a young family walking on a patch of wet sand that was back lit by the sun. I could see the colours and detail, as our eyes have evolved to cope with this, the camera sensor is just not evolved to anywhere near the level.... as good as they are, they are still primitive. However, I knew I could create this image.. in a style I really like, with just a few quick changes to my camera.

Back to Dale and Gemma.... very relaxed and I think that shows in the photos, a few very simple poses.. if poses at all, as I just ask them to be themselves, stand together or lean on each other.. you can see as the photos progress just how much, even, more relaxed they become.

New dedicated mobile pages and website

Just completed... though I expect to update it, much more in the new year.... a dedicated set of web pages and domain name for the mobile version of my site.

10% of hits on my site are via mobile devices at present and it's increasing. I've sized this to be 320 pixels wide which is on the small side, but with little size comes great speed... ;-) so the theory goes... even on my very poor GPRS, limited, blackberry.. it loads OK..

The animated, non-flash, photos may be replaced with a static photo.... depending on feedback...

* after listening to feedback... already, I've removed the animation and just gone single photo plus very basic, it's now even super quick on my GPRS limited Blackberry.

Wedding photos, what is in the edit?

It's quite clear that people have different ideas of what things mean. People can both say the same thing, yet take it to mean something very different. It can lead to, at best, a misunderstanding; at worst a big disappointment.

Every wedding photography service I provide includes your best images, not all images though it tends to be most of them. All are, at least, lightly edited and ready to print. Like the first image below: colours, exposure, contrast and white balance all checked. You will however notice the signs, plug socket, reflection on the door and picture frame.

The second image is what I consider to be fully edited. When I take a photo I very often see in my mind more than the scene as it is. This setting at Wynyard Hall is one of my favourites and lends itself to rich black and white tones. I just asked the bride to sit on the seat, she talked and joked with friends as we waited for the groom to arrive. All very natural and not over posed. You can see, and I hope appreciate, the time I've taken to remove distractions and to style the digital image in to something much more than the photo as it was captured.

The image above took me about 2 hours to create. To do, just the light edits, of the 300-500 photos I expect to present you, takes 5-10 hours to complete. This is often longer than the wedding photography itself. The fully edited images are now included on your dvd, with all of my wedding services, by default. I understand you want to print, share and use your wedding photos on the web. I provide you a license, not copyright, for you to do this.

My album inclusive services are where your fully edited wedding photos are presented, at their best, in professionally printed albums, canvases, framed prints and other media.

There is far more than just the removal of the lamp from the images immediately above and below. I could have framed the scene with the lamp removed. I felt the strong lines added to the setting and left it in knowing I'd edit the lamp for the album photo.

I want to ensure my hard work is presented in a way fitting the dedication I've invested in your wedding photos. As a result of this I offer you a discount, at the time of your booking, to have these fully edited wedding photos presented in a range of professionally crafted frames, albums, canvases and acrylics rather than by, unfortunately, far lesser quality consumer outlets.

Even my DVD only packages contain professionally printed media: a very modern little mini-folio with 20 6x6 prints also available is a very elegant 10x8 presentation case containing 30 mounted 7x5 prints. The reason I add these printed media is to ensure my work is presented at a high quality.

A cold crisp winters day with big smiles and laughter throughout the day. Much fate and significance was detailed throughout the wedding, tiny details even made their cake a masterpiece of decoration.

Lifestyle Family Portraits in natural light.

A few portrait photos from a recent lifestyle portrait session. I find location based portraits help, especially children, to relax and just have fun.... which helps create expressive photos, I hope.

The first two photos I feel demonstrates just how colour can reduce the impact of an image or conversely, how Black & White can emphasise the subject. Other than convert to B&W and work on the tone curve.. and a few other little tweaks... the images are identical. While the autumn colours are great, the B&W image really snaps your eye to what is important in the photo... the little lad laughing & having big fun!

This next image, for me, works just as well in either B&W or colour, possibly because there is little colour in the colour image: red & blue are strong in two areas of the photo, the rest of the image is very neutral.

Though I have some ideas in mind before I start a session I prefer to let the events happen and try to anticipate as much as I can: keeping it natural, real & fun. The first image I had in idea for at the start, though the bike was a big bonus and adds to the look.

The second image below, was just a complete fluke. The ducks waddled along behind us, I turned and he just crawled towards them, perfect.

I should have been editing wedding albums today, but having a pain in the neck from tooooo much editing I decided to step away from the keyboard today & have a little relax taking some photos: just for fun.

I'd read that the Tees Barrage white water course was open again, well it isn't: at least it's still barbwired & fenced off so I had a wander around the site I took photos of things that just caught my eye: contrasts, details & reflections.

This last one is a grated walkway reflected in the water.

Paul and Catherines wedding, Evenwood & Walworth Castle

My last wedding in October, Paul and Catherine's wedding in Co Durham and reception at Walworth Castle, just outside Darlington.

Another very relaxed and stress free, well that's how it seemed to me, wedding. Icy chill in the strong wind had everyone heading inside, though in the sun it was warm.

The day started with some candid bride preparation photos. If the light is good enough I find it's always best to use natural light, especially for the bride prep' photos. Nothing gives the game away like a big flash. Bride and bridesmaids would be on edge and the natural expressions would be lost.

Paul and Catherine braved the wind, I did find them a spot away from the worst of it for a few of their photos then a few inside the castle itself.

Emma and Michaels wedding at Croft & Headlam Hall

Emma & Michael's wedding at St Peters in Croft, a brilliantly sunny day. Emma's bridesmaids arrived in a fantastic VW camper van: Chaz, provided by www.lovedubcars.co.uk Emma arrived, in Mr Bennett, a classic VW Beetle Karman Cabriolet.

The grounds at Headlam are just about the best kept of any venue I've photographed weddings at. A little soft under foot as we'd had 4 days of solid rain though Emma was not put off by that.

They were both just so relaxed as we strolled around Headlams grounds for a few photos, possibly because we'd done their pre-wedding photo session at Headlam they knew what to expect and breezed through the photos with real natural expressions and few poses. I just asked them to be themselves while I wandered around at a distance to capture their images.

Eric & Jo's wedding, Tocketts Mill

Eric & Jo's wedding in Moorsholm, earlier in October.... a busy month October. Could have been a summer wedding as, again, it rained though not a problem for those that are prepared.

They exited the church to one of the biggest confetti drenchings ever, then headed back to the farm for some photos, wellies at the ready.

After a gentle stroll around the farm for a few little candids & posed photos it was off to the reception at Tocketts Mill, where the food smelled & looked fantastic... and the bar was well attended too.

Photography - inspiration or not so much.

A link to some superb images... and some I don't like as much as the others, but isn't that just the thing with photography, photos &, to a far wider extent, life.... what one person sees as pleasing another finds... not so much..

Getty Images... a little inspiration or not so much, you decide

While wedding, event & portrait photography are what pays for my car to be fixed, new photography equipment & keeping a roof over my head, it's also something I enjoy. I try to be creative, within the realms of what drives & motivates me & I also try to feel the vision of the clients that hire me for assignments & see things through their eyes too.

Here are just a small selection of Images I've taken that I really like. Sports, portraits, weddings, performance events & natural landscape type photos too. All offer a different experience and require their own approach both technical & aesthetic.

I just really really like this one. Loads of contrast & I really like the stance & the curve of the beach. Once very cold early spring morning at South Gare. I was well wrapped up, it's a good job she liked running :-)

I like photos, especially taking photos, when the person, regardless of how little they are... just shows their own personality... what is he doing?

Sometimes I even get out of bed at stupid o'clock in the morning & drive hundreds of miles... on the off chance I may be able to get a photo... like the image above. I knew the conditions would be good so off I went up to Bambrugh Castle & waited for the sun to come up.

Other times, I just get lucky.... I didn't check the huts were still there, didn't know the tide was high & the sun just came through the clouds brilliantly.... sunny Whitby very early one morning.

Positioned myself to get a strong contrast & knew I'd be pushing the contrasts post process to create the image I'd imagined in my head. It didn't need much work, get it right in camera as much as you can, but I knew it would be black & white for the effect I wanted. Stockton, near the Tees barrage white water course.

Wedding photography is great, I really enjoy the pressure: no second chances, and trying to be creative within an ever changing time limit.... you just don't keep the meal waiting! It's not just the single photo, it's how they will combine in an album. Seeing one images & knowing how you'll present it with another to create an effect.

Sometimes a little twist adds a fresh perspective, again, I'd taken the background image.. which worked great by itself & took the backs to the camera shot with this combination in mind.

After gazing at dad.... the little head turned and... click. Sometimes you just get lucky! be prepared!

Other times, you've watched the rehearsals... seen where the lights go & where the performers go & can position yourself, without disturbing the paying audience, to capture the moment. Darlington Arts Academy's Viva Las Vegas performance, I just liked the energy & red, black & white contrasts. Camera set to manual and no flash photography.

I look for strong contrasts & love black & whites, so they are often reflected in my photographs. I enjoy watching and anticipating, sometimes I get it right & sometimes I get to try again ;-) s

Kate and Nicky's Wynyard Hall Wedding

A perfect day for Kate and Nicky's wedding, the first day of October & it was red hot again, champagne in the sunshine relaxing on the terrace early in to the evening before the laughter and fun of the evening reception.

A service in Wynyards chapel followed by drinks on the laws and a gentle stroll around the grounds for some photos. The harsh direct sun is both a problem & an opportunity. The opportunity to use the autumn colours, leafy backdrops for their photos the problem... keeping harsh contrasts to a minimum & exposure under control.

The X factor was certainly present in heaps with the talented family & friends keeping everyone entertained: magic, music & dance.

Andrea and Martins wedding at Wynyard Hall. A very bright & sunny end to September. A day the summer has been crying out for arrived in late Autumn and was enjoyed to the full by family & friends attending.

The cutting of 2 cakes was a first for me. A Norwegian cake & British cake. For the Norwegian cake the groom covers his brides eyes the layer she slips the knife in to is how many children they will have..... 5, it seems for this happy couple.

Toby & Chelsea's wedding - Rushpool Hall

A warm & sunny late September day for Chelsea & Toby's wedding at St Nicholas' church in Guisborough. A nice stroll around the grounds of the priory after some group photos chosen by both Chelsea & Toby then a few formal & informal couple photos.

After a short time we all headed for Rushpool Hall for the reception celebrations. Celebrations enjoyed at full speed by Chelsea's little niece who was non-stop and centre of attention, which is great from a photographic point of view as adults relax and forget I'm even there.

I understand Chelsea's wedding dress was the first sold by Destiny Bridal of Stokesley, they had booked me a long time ago too.

Solberge Hall Wedding, Mark & Lyndsey

The 2 timings I never want photography to disrupt are the ceremony & the meal. The schedule was tight for the meal though we changed the planned order upon Mark & Lyndsey's arrival, they beat some of the guests. In my mind I had planned to photograph the shot outside Solberge, leaning against the columns, in daylight however that couldn't be so we managed the bonus of using some flash to create a more dramatic look.
I like the blue of the sky & the warm orangey colour of the columns so much, though I created a moody black and white, I prefer the colour photo below.

There is often much debate about technical v aesthetic aspects of photography: can a technically bad photo be a good photo.... well, the shot 6, to some has a technical flaw... to me it was exactly the look I was trying to achieve, a misty, warm, over exposed with lens flare for some drama.

Kate and Nick, Wynyard Hall Wedding pre shoot

Another Wynyard Hall pre-shoot this one had a little more peer pressure as there was a wedding photography training / workshop in progress. Fantastic venue to learn in as it's so many great rooms, backdrops and the grounds always well kept.

It's a shame it rained today as the trees are already starting to show some nice autumn colour. I'm certain by the time of their wedding day Kate and Nick will have some very golden backdrops. Lets just hope the weather is good.

Clients are generally a little nervous once the camera is taken out of the case. As my wedding photography is very natural I ask them just to be themselves and forget I'm there. Kate and Nick managed that at the 1st photo.

Alex & Rachel's wedding, Scruton 2011-09-03

Alex & Rachel's wedding held on the village green a short walk to the church for Rachel and no one getting lost between church and reception, a splendid idea. The bad weather passed letting the celebrations take place as everyone hoped, relaxed, full of smiles & laughter with jazz tunes filling the early autumn afternoon & evening.

Solberge Hall, Lyndsey and Mark

A pre-wedding photo shoot at Solberge Hall, located near Northallerton, with Mark & Lyndsey. My first visit to Solberge Hall and a very nice venue they've chosen for the wedding celebrations.

Nice masonry, I like stone work & textures... it's a little sad, but true... they can add a hint of contrast between very soft focus of natural elements like leaves and flowers and sometimes, especially sandstone, warmth and foundation ( always a good combination for wedding photos )

Inside Solberge Hall the stairs will offer a nice indoor group photo opportunity, should the weather not play ball. Hopefully, it will be a good clear day, so we can make best use of the grounds and the fallen tree which offers some photo possibilities.

Wynyard Hall, Andrea & Martin

With their wedding just a few weeks away Andrea & Martin had a few photos taken around Wynyard Hall, their wedding venue. While the indoor photos will remain consistent throughout the year, seasons can influence the look & style of photos taken outside. With the lousy summer we've been having the bonus for Andrea & Martin is the leaves are turning golden a little earlier & with luck we'll be able to take advantage of that on their big day to create some uber colourful & memorable wedding photos.

I'm also looking forward to the 2 wedding cakes... it's a first.

Chelsea & Toby's pre-wedding shoot

A windy day at the beach for this pre-wedding photo shoot. Having not seen either Chelsea or Toby for well over a year, since their booking, I was wandering around Saltburn Pier car park looking a little shifty... maybe... though recognised them straight away when I spotted them.

Both were very relaxed from the off, which is great for me as it really helps create natural unforced photos, which is also what they requested on their big day.

I've already looked through their images & sent them a selection to choose from. A full resolution image to do as they like: guest signing mount or just a portrait print for a frame.

The pre wedding photo shoot ( PWS ), a great time to visit the venue if possible, Headlam Hall in this case but far more important a fantastic chance for Emma & Michael to relax in front of the camera.

After 30 minutes of photos we discuss their group photos, also the schedule of events. As the PWS is about a month before the wedding itself the timings are now known. It's good to know where I need to be at what time also I gain an idea of where the sun will be on the day itself.

A few photos from Dean & Lucy's wedding at Crathorne Hall near Yarm. The clouds broody, as has been the way this summer. Many smiles & much laughter throughout their joyous day.

A string quartet, of friends & fellow musicians, provided musical accompaniment to their ceremony. No confetti at Crathorne so a ‘bubbletti’ welcome for the happy couple as they greeted their guests.

A few requested group photos, then a little time away from the party to capture their photos. Back to the celebrations, croquet and drinks on the lawn all very relaxed, carefree and happy.

Kay & Tom's wedding. A rainy day of biblical proportions, thunder & lightening echoing through the church of St Nicholas.

Purely from a photographic point of view it’s always a shame when a beautifully prepared wedding is washed out by the weather. Planned photos in Guisborough Priory were not possible as the outdoor moments were greeted with the sky pouring with rain: the worst I’ve ever had for a wedding.

A Bond theme complete with Aston Martin, a bride in horse drawn carriage & bridesmaids in a Rolls Royce, picture perfect for a warm sunny August wedding. Everything can be planned but the weather.

After the confetti the clouds burst again. The guests were ushered to the reception by the very best group of ushers ever, by the way. A smaller group of people returned inside the church to take some photos warm & dry.

The wedding day is just the beginning. The wedding day photos normally a treasure trove of memories & emotions to reflect back upon. Though I’m happy with the images I’ve captured of the day, I have offered Kay & Tom the chance to return to the Priory soon for some photos of their chosen location as they had planned.

this weekend I'll be photographing a wedding in Guisborough so I've been preparing my schedule, visited the location to look for the best photo spots.... just trying to ensure everything runs without a hitch.
